HPL Filmfest: Day 1

Posted by: Above The Aether In: Uncategorized

The festival started at 7pm friday and we stayed in the main theater to view the following:

  1. Cast a deadly spell (with screen writer Joseph Dougherty in the audience to field questions and comments before and after the movie). This movie was an HBO production, so the set, costumes, props, etc looked very good. Higher production values than I expected. It starred Fred Ward (Remo Williams) as Phil Lovecraft, a Ramond Chandler-esque private eye who lives in a world filled with magic. People use magic for everything from changing a tire to pouring a drink. Lovecraft doesn’t touch magic. He’s hired to find an old book that, of course, holds ancient evil power. If I had to describe this move in one sentence it would be: Lovecraft meets Chandler meets HBO. This was entertaining.
  2. Dreams in the Witch House (with writer/director Stuart Gordon in the audience fielding questions and comments). Gordon wrote and directed Dagon a few years ago and is well-respected in the HPL community. Dreams in the Witch House follows the HPL story very closely. I enjoyed this film, although it was a little bloody compared to the Cast a Deadly Spell. The acting was great and the effects were very clean and well-exectued.

Well, that is all for now. We’re headed to the festival later today to watch the short films. I happen to love the amateur shorts and look forward to the discussions with the amateur film makers as well. It’s amazing what these guys can accomplish with little or no money and lots of heart.

  • Dave: Not sure, Bryan, but I'd love to know where Craig lives.
  • Bryan Hanks: What city were those in?

  • epiphenita: Like Tom Waits without the music.
  • epiphenita: Reminds me of my good friend's artwork: http://victoriacarlson.blogspot.com/2009/06/untitled.html
  • Dave: I think someone should make some dance music from those "WHOAHs."
  • epiphenita: Oh, Dave. That was tonic to my soul. Perfect. I vote for an exorcism.
  • Dave: Hmm, looks sober to me.
  • Scott: I'm thinking that the guy with the hat might have had a drink or two before this picture was taken. Just a hunch...
  • Scott: There's a roleplaying scenario just waiting to be written based on these pictures. :-)

Stepping over the steaming pile of reality. This is one man's journey into the absurd.
