Cactus Music closing in Houston

Posted by: Above The Aether In: Uncategorized

One of the best sources of independent music in Houston, Cactus Music & Video, is closing up shop the end of March 2006.

This is a bummer on several accounts:

1. Cactus Music has been a great source of independent music in the mega-retail wasteland of Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Virgin Music and their ilk.

2. Cactus is located on South Shepherd, next to some other great places to shop (Whole Earth Provisions, Book Stop, Fly High Little Bunny, etc). It’s usually a ritual to hit several cool little shops in the same day.

3. Nick Hornby would appreciate Cactus Music.
4. It was my favotite shop in town.

Not sure if the popularity of music downloading (both legal and illegal) hurt the business or not. I suspect the popularity of the big chains (mentioned above) didn’t help any.

Hmm…I wonder if they’ll have a going out of buisness sale?

R.I.P Cactus…
