From Boing Boing:
In a crazy (and frightenly prophetic) example of life imitating art, Duran Duran has purchased a virtual island in the internet-based synthetic digital world of Second Life.
It’s interesting. 14 years ago, Neal Stephenson wrote a book detailing the exploits of humanity in a virtual world called the Metaverse where people wandered around dressed in their digital “avatars,” attending concerts, hanging out in virtual bars, driving virtual cars…all from the saftey of their computer terminals.
Second Life even uses the same word “Avatar” that Stephenson used in his book. I wonder if the Second Life creaters are fans of Stephenson or just couldn’t come up with any better term.
Well, I’m off to go to my REAL bed and get some REAL sleep.
