Super kung-fu grip

Posted by: Dave In: Technology |Weird

From the New Scientist Technology Blog:

Sarcos has come up with a system that uses just one engine instead of lots of them. The engine, and a tank containing a 24-hour supply of fuel, will be slung “beneath your rear end”, says Main. The engine (a turbine, two-stroke or four stroke – they haven’t decided yet) will then drive hydraulic fluid via high pressure lines to servo valves on each joint, amplifying the force used to move each limb when the wearer’s motion is sensed.

I have 3 questions for the makers of this military product.

1. Will a platoon of soldiers running across the battlefield wearing these hydraulic exoskeletons look and sound like a fleet of Swedish sewing machines darning socks under fire?

2. How much ammo will be wasted when one of these things backfires around a jittery squad of soldiers, scaring the crap out of them?

3. How long will it take before a tired soldier will forget to turn off his bionic suit when he visits the field latrine? I’m picturing someone accidentally rocketing himself out of the latrine with his pants around his cybernetic ankles.

  • Dave: Hmm, looks sober to me.
  • Scott: I'm thinking that the guy with the hat might have had a drink or two before this picture was taken. Just a hunch...
  • Scott: There's a roleplaying scenario just waiting to be written based on these pictures. :-)
