Coconut Crab

Coconut Crab

The Coconut Crab is the largest anthropod in the world, weighing in a 8-10lbs with legs up to a yard long.  It is named for its ability to crack coconuts with its claws.

Yeah.  I know.  It freaked me out too.

I picture a husband standing in the doorway, white as a ghost, after trying to take out the garbage and encountering this otherworldly creature.

“Honey…I just saw…i just saw….the devil…in crab form.”

P.S. – I can only think of one more frightening scenario.  What if they could fly?

Don’t you start that flying creature thing again. Remember the flying spider scenario? Sheesh.

That’s exactly what I thought of when I wrote this…except giant flying crabs are scarier than flying spiders by a long shot.

I wouldn’t go outdoors without a shotgun. Ever.

Why do I have issues on liking an animal? At least thinking its scary influences people to hate it and also people may decrease the species so whatever.

Oh and I am a 10 year old GIRL. Not a man.

Rhane, my apologies for thinking you are a man.
But things said…that bugger is the most ugly thing I’ve ever seen…like it makes me vomit a little bit in my mouth, and the mere fact of thinking bout the flying scenario…..ughhhhh…I wouldn’t go out my house without a shotgun and a couple of my trusty frag granades. I never do anyhow.

Coconnut-fed free range giant crabs…I bet thems is good eatin’ but dangerous looking. I think you’d have to get them to lower their guard with their one and only weakness…pina coladas.

I’ve tried one of those – it’s a delicacy in the Philippines and it is INCREDIBLY good. And REALLY REALLY meaty!!! Plus, the meat has a coconut aftertaste. Enough meat in em to feed you for a week!!!

But don’t be afraid. They’re very slow moving and they’re not too aggressive on humans. In fact you can lure one with an open coconut and it will come to you. Just make sure to be clear of their claws. If they can crack a coconut open – imagine what they would do to a finger.

You guys should see it firsthand. And if you get the chance, you should try it. It CAN be a good pet and will definitely make a good meal!!! =)

LOL!

Coconut Crabs are not slow nor fast. But if one comes near you, watch out for their pinchers because they will not let go that easy. And it is extremely painful. The bigger, the stronger. But they do taste mighty good when you boil them in hot water with salt and coconut milk. And don’t worry, they are not toxic…lol like what bluemarlin said. They are more afraid of you than you being afraid of them. And crabs do not kill people, lol, not unless you are allergic to crabs..lol. The only thing dangerous on coconut crabs are their pinchers.

Luna, according to Wikipedia, “Coconut crabs live in areas from the Indian to the central Pacific Ocean.” So you are safe in Hawaii…for now. ;-)

I’ve actually had these for a meal. Yes they are extremely meaty and twice as delishes as any crab I’ve had out of the Ocean( trust me…I’m from the Marshall Islands and I’d choose this over our abundance of lobsters any day). Yes they freak my out considering they are the size of King crab…just only on land.

These crabs are amazing! They may taste good but their populations are decreasing, although there’s not enough data to yet say they are endangered.
