Justine and I had a blast at the Maker Faire in Austin this past weekend. We just got back and we’re both a little pooped, but we are inspired by all the creative people and amazing things we saw. I’ll post on the experience soon and go into a little more detail.

Until then, please enjoy the photos.

Amazing stuff all around. I’d love to have seen this. But somehow the guy who could knit and drum at the same time particularly impresses me.

And what is it about catapults? There’s something extremely satisfying about seeing heavy objects hurled a long distance.

Yeah, the Maker Faire was unbelievable. The drumming knitter stopped me in my tracks. I was walking by and heard someone drumming and didn’t think anything of it at first because I didn’t see him knitting.

Then I saw what he was REALLY doing and I just stood there and stared at him knit and drum for a few minutes. I’m sure I was slack-jawed for several of those minutes.

The catapult (actually a trebuchet) was named “Mongo” and it could hurl a ten pound watermelon over 100 yards. They said Mongo could fling it a lot farther than that, but they had to scale down the power for fear of hitting nearby houses.

I was down-range for a couple of the launches and saw the watermelon turn into red vapor as it hit the ground. This caused the crowd of adults to begin cheering and laughing like children.

If the faire comes to a city near you, I recommend checking it out. It’s truly an amazing site.

  • Scott: Damn, if he was DM'ing, I'd actually have to play, just for the show!
