Ike was a bastard

Posted by: Dave In: Photography |Weather

If you’re curious what life is like after a hurricane, there are some unbelievable photos here and here and here that capture the devastation fairly well.  It’s been a rough week so far.  The apartment complex where Justine and I live has rented a giant generator to supply power to the building for crucial things like AC, light and refrigeration.

We still do not have running water or electricity to the whole apartment.  Yet we both feel lucky to have what we have.

There are millions (yes, literally millions) of people without electricity or water in the greater Houston area.  Many of our friends are in the same boat.

I’ve been putting in a lot of hours at work and am pretty beat.  Justine and I had the first “real” meal tonight at a local restaurant that was open for business.  I drank my margarita so fast I think I shocked the waitress.  That’s ok, they made more margaritas.

I hope the lives of all my friends and colleagues return to normal in the weeks and months to come.

I heard someone say “It’s a good thing Texans are tough.”

Yep, it sure is.

Tara and I are very glad to hear you and Justine weathered the initial storm. We hope your lives return to normal soon. I have to hand it to you, Dave, you’re a tough one.

Last night was the first night I didn’t have to sit down to pee in the dark (because aiming in total darkness is a bit problematic).

It’s the little things in life that are a blessing, honestly.

I’m looking forward to this weeks Zen class. I could use a shitload of extra Zen in my life right now.

Thanks for the well-wishes. It’s been nice to get notes and calls from our friends and family during this crazy time.

That’s *one* way to develop a greater appreciation of your usual lifestyle. We’re glad to hear that you’re okay, and I’m sure things will be back to normal before you know it. Just goes to show that Nature can indeed be a Mother when she wants to be!

In a sense, you’ve just had a serious dose of the spiritual in the form of a real life demonstration of what is luxury and what you really need. Enjoy your Zen; I have a most non-Zen-like envy of your having such a place available to you!

You are definitely in Texas. The second picture lists among other things the electric chairs at the old folks home. And here I thought it was more a lethal injection state…

Glad you guys weathered the storm, good luck with recovery. Thinking of you in the land of cheese and chocolate.
