Taxonomy of heavy metal band names

If you think there’s a formula to heavy metal band names, you might be right.

My favorite is the “Triple Umlaut” in the bottom left corner of the diagram.

If you’re not careful, a blog like this could end up being a duplicate of jwz’s, minus the DNA updates and mixtapes. I think that guy must spend most of his free time surfing the web for really bizarre stuff to post on his blog.

The only thing surprising in that diagram is the Faulkner references. Poe, Kafka, or Lovecraft I might have expected, but not Faulkner. Interesting to see one of Mississippi’s greatest appearing in the context of heavy metal.

Jim, yeah sometimes I just can’t help myself when I see something on his blog. I have to repost it.

This was one of those times.

I was a metal fan in high school and college and thought some of these band names were so cool.

  • Joshua: Rush rules. Have you heard of the new documentary?
  • Scott: Damn, if he was DM'ing, I'd actually have to play, just for the show!

  • Nathan: (said in robotic monotone) Indeed,I...think...this...is...pretty...great
  • Dave: I like the bit about the Bald Eagle. Hope he gets elected.
