Gmail IMAP nothing but heartache

The good: Google introduced IMAP protocol for Gmail, allowing multiple platforms (web, phone, desktop application) to synch gmail seemlessly. For example, if I delete an email from my desktop Mac Mail application, it will be deleted across all the access points I use to manage email. Or so the theory goes.

The bad: It’s a fucking disaster if you are using a Mac. I fiddled with it for 2+ hours this evening and managed to crash Mac Mail at least a dozen times and download over 200+ spams to my Blackberry (I’m just lucky I didnt’ have more than 200+ emails in my Gmail account at the time. Normally I have over a thousand, but cleaned it out recently). Do you know how long it takes to delete 200+ emails on a Blackberry? Well, I do.

The ugly: I am back to POP3 access. It works fine and with the right filters in Gmail, does exactly what I need it to do. Unfortunalely, it’s not nearly as useful as IMAP could be.

At least I’m not the only person having these problems.

Buncha new iPods

Apple released a bunch of new iPods today. They look pretty neat. I wonder if the iPhone will lose any sales to the new “iPod Touch”? They seem pretty similiar. The iPod Classic (the name gives me flashbacks to Coke Classic) just got a huge bump in storage to 160GB and the iPod Nano is half the size and can now play video.

Oh, the shuffle’s got some new colors too.

Forty-five minutes after the coveted iPhone went on sale, the folks at iFixit have taken one completely apart. Pretty confidently, I must say.

My precious part duex

I stayed up until midnight last night noodling around with my new laptop. Justine is usually my egg timer for when I’ve been in front of the computer too long. Most nights she wanders into the office and reminds me that I should go to bed at some point.

Last night she left me to my own devices, pun intended.

I’ve finally gotten the wireless home network up and running; linking my PC, external hard drive, Apple Hi-Fi and laptop. Now I can sit on the couch with my laptop and access files from my external hard drive in the office and stream music to the Hi-Fi across the room – all at the same time.

Here’s the funny part. I know nothing about networking.

Apple has made it very easy to network your whole house with a few simple set-up screens in the installation software for their wireless devices. I ran into a little trouble last night, but after a 20 minute call with Apple, I finished the setup and did a little jig today.

If you are considering “making the switch” and aren’t quite sure whether or not you will grok the whole ordeal, let me assure you that it’s pretty easy. I had a puzzled look on my face (furrowed brow, chin scratching, cheek-biting, etc) yesterday for a few hours until it all started to make sense.

I am in the process of installing Adobe CS3 into my brand spanking new MacBook Pro tonight. It is possibly the most beautiful piece of hardware I have ever purchased. I am looking forward to exploring all the cool things it can do.

Einstein, maraschino cherries and apples

Walter Isaacson’s new Einstein biography is pretty good so far. It’s a gigantic 700 page tome that I have just started to read last weekend. I’m hoping the physics (when I get to that section) will be easily digestible for someone like myself who doesn’t have a professional background in the hard sciences.

I’m not sure how this is connected, but I have discovered the joys of maraschino cherries recently. I bought a large jar of the cherries and used a few of them in a bowl of fruit salad last week. Since the jar was so large I had a lot of cherries left over and have been putting extra cherries and cherry juice in my diet 7-Up for the last several days.

This, my friends, is amazingly good. You should try it.

P.S. – In completely unrelated news, according to Apple’s website, my new laptop has been configured at the factory and left Shanghai, China yesterday. It’s slated for delivery on Monday. I am more excited than you could possibly imagine. I haven’t worked on a Mac in at least 5 years. I’m excited to make the switch and begin exploring all the creative stuff that Macs are so adept at doing.
