Shinya Kimura – motorcycle builder

Shinya Kimura started building custom motorcycles from the ground up in Japan. He doesn’t plan anything. He just starts cutting metal. The quote that gets me is this one:

“It feels nothing like how violent it looks from the outside. It’s very serene. The ground and the sky are so white there is no boundary between them. I have never flown, but it feels like flying an airplane using a reciprocating engine. I can’t tell you how peaceful it is.” – Shinya Kimura

Having been riding motorcycles for a year now, this is the quote that sticks with me. Riding a motorcycle is one of the most peaceful things I have ever experienced.

It’s funny how the perception of a motorcycle is usually a loud and obnoxious machine, but riding one is just the opposite. Very zen I suppose…

This is an interesting 20 year old British interview with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (the creators of the Watchmen).

This episode of Prisoners of Gravity was broadcast in 1991 and it is a half hour documentary about Alan Moore and David Gibbons’ genre twisting series Watchmen. Contained within this video is the presenter, Command Rick, asking both David Gibbons and Alan Moore a series of questions about the structures they imposed on the series and the various thematic layers within the twelve issues.

I love stumbling across good industrial design. And when the industrial design involves a tool, it’s even better. I follow several tool/gadget blogs and stumbled into this while reading one of my favorite tool blogs, Toolmonger.

It’s pretty amazing how much planning and effort goes into a little tool like this. You may see a bucket of these tools for sale at the cash register in your local hardware store and never really pay much attention to it. However, someone has put a lot of thought into this little gizmo.
