Shinya Kimura started building custom motorcycles from the ground up in Japan. He doesn’t plan anything. He just starts cutting metal. The quote that gets me is this one:

“It feels nothing like how violent it looks from the outside. It’s very serene. The ground and the sky are so white there is no boundary between them. I have never flown, but it feels like flying an airplane using a reciprocating engine. I can’t tell you how peaceful it is.” – Shinya Kimura

Having been riding motorcycles for a year now, this is the quote that sticks with me. Riding a motorcycle is one of the most peaceful things I have ever experienced.

It’s funny how the perception of a motorcycle is usually a loud and obnoxious machine, but riding one is just the opposite. Very zen I suppose…

I love stumbling across good industrial design. And when the industrial design involves a tool, it’s even better. I follow several tool/gadget blogs and stumbled into this while reading one of my favorite tool blogs, Toolmonger.

It’s pretty amazing how much planning and effort goes into a little tool like this. You may see a bucket of these tools for sale at the cash register in your local hardware store and never really pay much attention to it. However, someone has put a lot of thought into this little gizmo.

If you like this sort of thing, you’ll probably enjoy these blogs I frequent about this sort of thing:

A combat tank which was used in World War II was the setting for this work of art. As a protest against the Danish (USA´s, UK´s) involvement in the war in Iraq the tank was covered from the canon to the caterpillar tracks with knitted and crocheted squares made with pink yarn The 15 x 15 cm squares in pink yarn/thread, were knitted by many people from many European countries and USA. The process of covering the tank was documented with a video and this video is shown in ”Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center“ (Copenhagen, Denmark) as part of the exhibition “TIME” from April 27 – June 4, 2006.
