HP Lovecraft monsters as drawn by children

Since their original publication in the 1920s, the stories of H.P. Lovecraft have endured and grown into an entire subset of the horror genre unto themselves, with themes of the unavoidable insanity that comes with knowledge and cosmic insignificance that are far more subtle and ultimately terrifying than the average ghost story.

Which makes them great entertainment for eight year-olds.

HP Lovecraft Film Festival 2009

Having a great time at the HP Lovecraft Film Festival here in cloudy Portland, OR. This year’s short films were pretty good overall.

Some stand out films this year were “Noirville”, “Tinglewood”, “Seance” and “Dirt Dauber.”

I’m looking forward to a showing of “The Mist” later tonight, which is a faithful adaptation of Stephen King’s story of the same name.

Darkest of the Hillside Thickets

I took these photos and video last night at Tony Starlights in Portland. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets played to a packed house for the HP Lovecraft Film Festival. The show was fantastic. Justine and I were singing along to all the crazy Thickets’ songs. A good time was had by all. Here’s a video of the Thickets playing “Marine Biologist” last night.

HP Lovecraft Filmfest 2008

It’s that time of year again, folks! Justine and I mysteriously woke up in Portland, Oregon yesterday standing in front of the Hollywood Theater. It’s rainy. It’s cold. It’s dark.

In other words…it’s perfect.

We watchd the introduction by Robert Price and Brian Lumely. I also met Mike Mignola and chatted about Hellboy a little bit. We’re looking forward to seing the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets tonight at Tony Starlights Supper Club. The Thickets plays rock-n-roll enspired by the tales of H.P. Lovecraft. In costume.

So far we’ve seen two seperate blocks of short films that were very good. Some stand shorts were:

Eel Girl – An amatuer film from New Zealand about a female fish creature captured by scientists. Creepy, thoughtful and funny all at the same time.

AM:1200 – A film about a man struggling with greed who finds himself in a very unusual radio station.

The Casting Call of Cthulhu – A funny short film about making a short film about Cthulhu. Good stuff.

I’ll post some more photos and updates this weekend.

The Call of Cthulhu as interpreted by Wordle

I was recently shown a really cool site called Wordle that takes any text and converts it into a word cloud, giving more frequently used words more prominence on the page.

This is where writing and art collide. It’s both beautiful and interesting at the same time.
