Darkest of the Hillside Thickets

Posted by: Dave In: HPL| Music| Oregon

I took these photos and video last night at Tony Starlights in Portland. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets played to a packed house for the HP Lovecraft Film Festival. The show was fantastic. Justine and I were singing along to all the crazy Thickets’ songs. A good time was had [...]

HP Lovecraft Filmfest 2008

Posted by: Dave In: Film| HPL| Oregon

It’s that time of year again, folks!  Justine and I mysteriously woke up in Portland, Oregon yesterday standing in front of the Hollywood Theater.  It’s rainy.  It’s cold.  It’s dark.
In other words…it’s perfect.
We watchd the introduction by Robert Price and Brian Lumely.  I also met Mike Mignola and chatted about Hellboy a little bit.  We’re [...]

Hurricane Ike

Posted by: Dave In: Texas| Weather

UPDATE - Saturday, Sept 12th - We’re all fine here, just without power and water.  It’s like camping, except not nearly as much fun.
We are staying in Houston to ride out Hurricane Ike.  We have plenty of food, water, batteries, etc to keep us going.  I’ll try to take some photos or video of the [...]

Edouard

Posted by: Dave In: Texas| Writing

Tropical storm Edouard is supposed to hit us in Houston tonight around midnight.
Our storm supplies consist of olives, vermouth and vodka.  It worked for Rita, why not Edouard?
I’ll try to post some photos or video of the tropical storm experience here later tonight.

UPDATE: Monday, July 04 - 7:55PM (CST) - Edouard is now slated [...]

Gas Buddy

Posted by: Dave In: Business| Places| Travel| Web

No, this is not a pill or a new type of underwear, it is a website that tracks the price of gas by county across the United States.  Green is good.  Red is bad.
Check out Gas Buddy here.

Cactus Music is back!

Posted by: Dave In: Business| Music| Texas

I got a great piece of news today via the magical interwebs. Cactus Music is back in business and will be celebrating their grand re-opening tonight with some live music. I wrote about Cactus Music closing their doors over 2 years ago and was a little disappointed by the announcement.
Houston Calling, a great [...]

Election Day November 2007

Posted by: Dave In: Current Affairs| Political| Texas

It’s funny.  I just heard a local news organization say something to the effect of “we’re bringing to bear the most comprehensive election coverage ever in Houston.”  Blah blah, internet…blah blah…podcast…blah blah live blogging…etc, etc, etc.
The punchline is - the projected turn-out at the polls is around 10%.
I’d say the news organizations can cut back [...]

Flying pigs announce: Hell freezes over

Posted by: Dave In: Colorado| Sports

HOLY SHIT THE COLORADO ROCKIES ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!
I am shocked and don’t have much to say other than I REALLY hope they win the series.  I’m not a huge sports fan (I had to add “sports” as a tag just for this post), but I consider them my hometown team and would [...]

From REI’s website:
The next step in achieving our green-building objectives is to create a prototype store that incorporates experimental ideas. We have selected the remodel of our Boulder, Colo., store and have chosen to work with Gensler Architects, a leading design firm and champion of sustainable design.
Scheduled for completion in the fall of 2007, [...]

It’s lizard season in Houston

Posted by: Dave In: Outdoors| Texas

This little lizard was climbing on a locked box of doggie poop bags posted throughout out apartment complex. I’ve been seeing a lot of lizards crawling around Houston lately. Is this a sign of the end times or just autumn in Houston?
